The days of robotic, monotone "virtual assistants" are fading fast. The "voices" your smart devices use to communicate seem to grow more nuanced, realistic and recognizable with each update, and it's no surprise that tech-giant Google is leading the way in this area.

Google's virtual assistant, the aptly named "Google Assistant," currently has 10 voices to choose from (five male and five female), plus a celebrity option voiced by television and movie star Issa Rae. Each voice has a distinctive tone, character and personality, giving users more ways than ever to customize their devices.

But how exactly do you change the voice of Google Assistant? The good news is that the process is not complicated. It just takes a few steps, changing slightly depending on your software to access the virtual assistant.

Change Your Google Assistant's Voice on Google Devices

Here's how to change the voice of your Google Assistant on your Google-enabled devices:

Open the Google Home app on a smartphone or tablet, making sure that you're signed into the correct Google account within the app. (If you set up your Google devices through this app, the account should already be set up and good to go.)
Tap your user icon in the upper right corner of the screen;
Tap Assistant Settings;
Tap Assistant on the horizontal menu bar;
Tap Assistant Voice;
This will open a menu to the eleven available voices. Find one you like and select it.

After following theses steps, the voice of your Google Assistant should be changed on any devices connected to that Google account.

Press and hold the Home button (or say "OK Google");
At the bottom right tap the small compass icon;
Tap your user icon in the upper right corner of the screen;

Choose your voice from the list of options.
